Scintilla Charter Academy hosts ground breaking ceremony

Scintilla Charter Academy GBVALDOSTA, GA – Scintilla Charter Academy broke ground late last month and the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber Ambassadors were there to help turn the soil.

Julie Hiers, who will be the principal of the new school, is confident that she has some of the best educators in the county signed on to teach at Scintilla in Erica Luke, Lauren Baker, Debbie Santana and Hannah Summers. “They have wiped every tear, they have looked over every line of the petition we had to write, they were there every step of the way,” she said. “You are looking at the best teachers in Valdosta and Lowndes County right now.”

The school, scheduled to open in August 2015, will welcome students of all ability levels, including but not limited to special education, gifted, and English Language Learners. Scintilla Charter Academy’s website states:

An innovative small school design focused on project based and service learning will support the districts’ goals for improving performance in at-risk students. SCA will serve an area of need in the districts, where schools are heavily impacted by overcrowding. Parents deserve educational options and the right to choose the avenue by which their children are best served.

As explained on Scintilla’s website, while charter schools are public schools, they operate with freedom from some of the regulations imposed on district schools. Charters must meet certain performance goals in order to remain open.

The school will offer curriculum innovations to include both project-based learning and service learning. These applied learning approaches will integrate classwork with real world experiences outside of the classroom, a strategy that is proven to improve retention and effect positive change in communities.

“Dreams do come true, and God does answer prayers,” remarked an emotional Hiers at the groundbreaking. “Valdosta, this is your school.”
